Defender Custom Wheel Carrier

The A2B Land Rover Defender Wheel Carrier

As part of our restoration of a 2001 Tomb Raider, we have designed and manufactured a spare wheel carrier for Defenders, which uses a cantilever system to open with the door. As anyone who has tried to install large tyres on a Defender knows, the factory system of carrying the spare wheel bolted directly to the rear door has its limitations. Firstly if you fit a tyre that is too wide, the tyre touches the door and you can’t do the wheel bolts up to secure it. Even if you go for a tall tyre that isn’t too wide, over time the extra weight causes the rear door hinges to sag under the additional load of the heavier tyre/ wheel combination and the door becomes harder and harder to close properly, eventually needing to be lifted up as it is closed to make the latch line up.

The solution to this is a separate wheel carrier, which moves the load of the wheel from the door hinges and onto either the stronger parts of the body or in some cases the wheel carrier is combined with an alternative rear bumper bumper to which the wheel carrier is mounted so the weight is carried by the bumper mounts. These carriers all solve the problem of damage to the rear door hinges and most of them are adjustable to accommodate wider & taller tyre/ wheel combinations but many aftermarket spare wheel carriers have to be opened separately from the door, swung out of the way and then the door opened to allow access to the rear cargo area. This becomes inconvenient as it makes access a two stage process and the separate carriers often bangs into the door whilst it’s open causing some minor, but annoying paint damage.

In order to avoid this problem we designed our carrier to carry the wheel’s weight on the main body of the Defender, using the reinforced steel sections of the rear tub as mounting points, then connecting to the rear door with a cantilever system so that the carrier is permanently connected to the door and swings away with the door, but without putting any additional weight on the door. By being connected to the door the frame can never swing into the door when it is open, so the risk of damage associated with other carriers is not there. More importantly though the carrier opens with the door meaning that access to the load area is as simple as the factory design, only without the potential damage to the door hinges.

These wheel carriers are available from stock for Dhs/- 2,950 fitted.

Air Suspension

range-rover-air-suspension-strutWhilst this may not be an officially recognized problem, several of the European manufacturers of SUVs have problems with the air suspension systems here in the Middle East and certain other countries with hot and harsh climates. Particularly prone to suspension air leaks are our beloved Land Rovers, the problem affects most late model Range Rovers, LR3 & LR4 models and can be quite expensive to repair, particularly if the early symptoms are ignored leading to a total failure.

Early symptoms of an air leak are a loss of pressure overnight, meaning when you come out to the car in the morning, the car is sitting lower than it was when you parked it. This may occur only on one axle, so the front is down and the rear is still at normal height, or vice versa, or the whole car may be down on its lowest setting. If this is happening, you have an air leak in the suspension system; if it’s a small leak the car may be able to re-inflate the suspension once you start the car and it may return to normal height and appear to function as it should whilst you are driving.  If your car is displaying these symptoms, it is time to make an appointment at the workshop and get your suspension checked, because a total failure will follow in the not too distant future if the symptoms are ignored. At this stage, providing you can’t hear the suspension compressor running constantly, it is still normally safe to drive the car without notable risk of further damage to the related suspension components. If you can hear the air compressor running constantly whilst driving, then DO NOT drive the car, stop it somewhere safe, turn it off and call a recovery truck to take it to the workshop. If the compressor runs constantly for a sustained period it will burn out and this is one of the more expensive components of your suspension system to replace.

If you suffer a total air suspension failure, the car will drop to its lowest setting (again maybe only on one axle) and will not return to normal height even with the engine and hence suspension compressor running; this can happen when the car has been parked, or it can even occur such that a suspension airbag deflates suddenly after going over a bump, normally here after going over a speed bump a little too fast. If this happens to you pull over as soon as it is safe to do so, turn the car off and call a recovery to take the car to the workshop. DO NOT drive it there, in addition to the obvious dangers of driving a car without working suspension, you will be driving with the suspension air compressor running constantly, trying to re-inflate the suspension and it will probably have burnt out by the time you get to the workshop, leading to a repair bill several thousand Dirhams more than it needed to be.

What causes this issue? In most cases suspension air bag failures are due to the rubber components of the airbag perishing and splitting, likely caused by the hot atmosphere we experience in this part of the world. We do get asked from time to time for a long -term solution to the problem and the answer is that there isn’t a perfect solution that will maintain the same ride comfort of the existing system. There are kits on the market that we have fitted for a few customers owning older Range Rovers with problematic air suspension systems, these kits replace the air bags with steel coil springs working with shock absorbers for damping. This solution solves the problem of air suspension leaks as the air system is no longer used at all, but the steel coil springs, whilst providing a perfectly reasonable ride, are not as comfortable as the air bags and once fitted the car is set at a fixed ride height, adjustment is no longer possible.

In most cases owners accept this is a weak point of the air suspension system when used in hot climates and the cost of maintaining the system is the price to be paid for the comfort provided by these luxury SUVs. As the cars get older and their value depreciates, the cost of maintaining the air suspension system may not make good sense and at this point the compromise of comfort over cost may very well lead owners to convert to the steel coils. If you have gotten to this point with your car, we can book your car in and carry out the conversion for you so that you no longer have to worry that you’ll walk out in the morning to find your Land Rover nose down on the bump stops.
